What Every Mom Should Keep in Her “Mom Bag” This Summer

Listen… moms carry EVERYTHING.

Snacks. Wipes. Tiny toys. Random rocks kids insisted on bringing home. Receipts from three months ago. Half-used lip balm. Chargers that may or may not work anymore. Emergency fruit snacks. Someone else’s sunglasses.

And honestly? We deserve awards for how prepared we are at all times.

As a mom of 4 and now a grandparent of 4, my “Mom Bag” has officially evolved into a full-blown “Mimi Bag.” And while my kids are grown, I still leave the house prepared for just about anything because if there’s one thing motherhood teaches you, it’s this:

Kids can turn a completely normal outing into a minor emergency in under 30 seconds.

Summer especially keeps moms BUSY. Beach days, playgrounds, camping trips, hiking adventures, sports practices, boat rides, cookouts, festivals and family vacations all sound amazing… until someone is bleeding, overheating, stung by something or suddenly “STARVING” five minutes after leaving the house.

That’s why I always recommend moms keep a few simple safety and first aid essentials in their bag during the summer months.

Not because we expect emergencies but because being prepared gives you confidence.

The Ultimate Summer Mom Bag Checklist

Summer dehydration sneaks up FAST — especially on kids running around outside. Bring more water than you think you need.

☀️ Sunscreen

And reapply it. One morning application before leaving the house does not count for an all-day pool or park day.

🩹 Band-Aids

Honestly, these are almost emotional support supplies for kids at this point.

🧴 Hand Sanitizer & Antibacterial Wipes

Because kids somehow touch every sticky surface known to man.

❄️ Instant Cold Packs

Perfect for bumped heads, playground falls, sports injuries and mystery “owies.”

🐝 Bug Spray

A MUST for Maryland summers — especially evenings near the water.

🕷️ Tick Protection

As an avid hiker, I ALWAYS treat my hiking shoes and outdoor gear with permethrin. Studies show permethrin-treated clothing can reduce tick bites significantly, and it’s one of my favorite outdoor safety tips for families.

Ticks can carry illnesses like Lyme disease, so prevention matters — especially during hiking, camping and outdoor play.

👕 Extra Clothes

Because somebody WILL spill something.

🍎 Snacks

Trust me on this one. Hungry kids can go from sweet angels to tiny angry raccoons very quickly. 😂

A few gauze pads, antibiotic ointment, medical tape and children’s medications can make a huge difference during summer outings.

Great for hot days, sports tournaments and long outdoor adventures.

📱 Portable Phone Charger

Because a dead phone during an emergency is the worst possible timing.

❤️ Emergency Information

Especially important for allergies, medications or younger children.

PRO TIP

Toss an Uno game in your Mom Bag.

Seriously.

Those long restaurant waits, rainy campground afternoons and “I’m boooored” moments hit differently when you can pull out Uno like a parenting magician. My grands LOVE this one.

The Truth About Mom Bags

The older I get, the more I realize the “Mom Bag” isn’t really about carrying stuff.

It’s about carrying comfort. Preparedness. Solutions. Backup plans. Snacks.

It’s about being the person everyone looks at when something happens.

And honestly? Moms are REALLY good at that.

So no, you don’t need to carry an entire emergency room around with you this summer. But having a few smart safety essentials nearby can make outings smoother, safer and way less stressful.

Because prepared moms panic less.

And let’s be honest…The Mom Bag usually saves the day.
